Director of Production, Exhibits + Specialty Events

Position Overview

This is a key position for one of the fastest growing PSAV business units. Direct, manage, and mentor the Exhibits + Specialty Events project management team in successful and profitable execution of projects from concept development while ensuring the utmost customer satisfaction with PSAV’s clients.    Responsible for the day to day management of the E+SE Project Managers including recruitment, screening, hiring and management of full time Project Managers and freelance technical staff. Additionally, this position must work closely with the VP and Sales Director for E+SE's in a collaborative team effort, to win new business. 

The ideal candidate must possess:

  • Strong Production experience is critical, but must be able to pivot to a sales focus with excellent client facing skills

This position will report to the Vice President of Exhibits + Specialty Events

Key Job Responsibilities   

Departmental Management

Manage all aspects of the assigned Production team along with the freelance labor group. Act as liaison between other departments, offices or divisions.  Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for departmental activity. Maintain the E+SE Project Manager Calendar, resolve conflicts and communicate updates/changes to both the Vice President, E+SE and Project Managers.  Review show reports to identify challenges, find solutions and determine training opportunities. Regularly communicate with Project Manager through on site visits, email, phone and regularly scheduled Production Meetings.

Staff Development

Support internal training programs to improve upon project managers skill sets.  Schedule business and approve personal time (vacation etc.) for employees.  Conduct yearly performance reviews with all direct reports.  Working in conjunction with the VP of E+SE, to develop training plans for all E+SE PM’s to ensure maximum workforce flexibility and the ability to support the team, sales, and our clients. Regularly visit show sites to ensure safe, efficient procedures are being followed and ensure best practices are identified and recorded for future training.

Equipment and Labor Management

Review equipment order entry inventory tracking system processes; work with the operations team on any sub-rentals or equipment substitution issues and address all conflicts quickly. Develop standards on how to best manage the freelance labor process to ensure freelance crew is hired in a timely fashion and hire crew locally when possible. Regularly review the freelance labor calendar. Publish, maintain and enforce labor policy guidelines for independent contractors and as-needed freelance labor working our jobs.  Oversee recruitment and engagement of independent contractors and other freelancers we hire.

Project Management/ Sales Support

Provide support, either personally or through delegation to the sales team during preparation of quotes as requested.  Assist in determining requirements for both equipment and labor.  Assist sales team in the specification of event labor requirements to ensure that required margins are met.  Participate in the EPT review process as needed to ensure processes and profit targets are being met.  Assign projects to Project Managers based on factors including existing relationships, area of expertise and personality.  Publish, maintain and adjust schedules, as circumstances require.

Required Experience :

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma required
  • 5+ years of project management experience in Corporate Staging or Broadcast industry
  • 8+ years of field experience in Corporate Staging or Broadcast industry
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Positive approach to teamwork, sales and problem solving
  • Strong Client relationship skills
  • Strong technical background
  • Works well under pressure
  • Ability to mutli-task
  • MS Office experience required
  • CAD knowledge and experience required
  • Formal technical training desirable
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to sit, stand and walk at least 4-6 hours per day
  • Ability to bend, climb, crawl, grasp, kneel, reach and stoop at least 1 hour per day
